The Big Game Is Almost Here

America’s best-known unofficial holiday is coming up. And it turns out the Big Game is more than football. It’s the nation’s second-largest day of food consumption in a given year, trailing only Thanksgiving.

Whether you like the Patriots or the Falcons, February 5 will be big, and so will our appetites.

Wonder how all that food and beverage makes it to you? It’s by the truckload:

  • 49.2 million cases of beer = 16,600 truckloads
  • 4.3 million pounds of pretzels = 172 truckloads
  • 125 million chicken wings = 520 reefer truckloads
  • 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips = 328 truckloads
  • 71 million pounds of avocados for guacamole = 1,775 reefer truckloads

Snacks not your thing? Here are five more stats about the Big Game:

  1. The Patriots are the second-most valuable team in the NFL (behind the Dallas Cowboys), worth an estimated $3.4 billion according to Forbes; the Falcons are 19th on the list at $2.13 billion.
  2. There has never been a punt returned for a touchdown in the Super Bowl; three blocked punts have been returned for TDs.
  3. Four NFL teams have never appeared in the Super Bowl – Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars.
  4. There has never been an overtime during the Super Bowl.
  5. The NFL will use 72 specially made footballs in the Super Bowl; the league goes through 700,000 balls in a season.
