Behind every donation is a cause that matters to someone.

That’s the heart of TQL’s Annual Giving Campaign (AGC), a company tradition that’s now in its 21st year. The initiative gives TQL employees the opportunity to choose the charitable organizations and causes they care about, from animal welfare and medical research to environmental protection and children’s causes.

This year’s campaign, held Aug. 11-18, was another strong showing of what can happen when TQL’ers come together to give back.

Together, employees and the TQL Foundation:

  • Raised over $1.5 million, including the TQL Foundation’s 50% match on thousands of donations for 3,600+ charities. The campaign surpassed its $1 million goal for a fifth straight year.
  • Reached 75% participation, with more than 6,550 team members across 65+ offices taking part. That rate is more than seven times the 10% average for employer matching gift programs, according to America’s Charities.
  • Donated more than $36.9 million to nonprofits since 2006.

Led by Charity Captains, employee volunteers who rally coworkers for volunteerism and fundraising efforts, the Annual Giving Campaign provided opportunities to support communities nationwide.

Picking the causes that matter most

The numbers tell an important story. So do the people behind them.

Charity Captain Zach donated to Mission K9 Rescue after seeing a friend, a retired Army veteran and former K9 handler, reunite with his retired military working dog. After Tuko retired, Zach’s friend worked with the organization to bring him home to live with his family.

“Charitable giving is huge for me and my family, and I love giving back,” Zach said.

Third-year Charity Captain Logan said personal connections motivated his team at Cincinnati HQ. After spending a Saturday volunteering with the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative (CYC) during the TQL Cares Volunteer Challenge several months earlier, Logan said multiple TQL’ers donated to the nonprofit during the Annual Giving Campaign.

CYC helps young people stay in school and prepare for college and careers. The hands-on experience gave volunteers a firsthand look at how the nonprofit creates opportunities for students in need.

Big Brothers Big Sisters events inspired some of Logan’s team members to give to that organization. Others supported Disabled American Veterans, a nonprofit they knew through their military experience or TQL’s Military Month “Helpy Hour,” where employees assemble care packages and thank-you cards.

“I liked seeing people get involved in something that’s important to them,” Logan said.

A culture of giving

Personal connection also helped Charity Captain Hannah engage new team members in TQL’s Daytona Beach office. If a newcomer wanted to learn more about the Annual Giving Campaign, she knew exactly where to start.

“I’d ask, ‘What are you passionate about?’” Hannah said.

Nearly 80 people make up TQL’s Daytona Beach team, which has achieved near-100% participation in the Annual Giving Campaign in each of the past three years. Hannah attributes the interest to TQL leadership’s support and TQL Cares-led initiatives encouraging giving and volunteerism year-round.

The team banded together for a Volunteer Challenge beach cleanup in the spring and removed 26 pounds of trash in three hours. A year earlier, they removed 60 pounds of cigarette butts, broken beach furniture, plastics and other garbage.

That same team spirit carried into the Annual Giving Campaign, as Daytona Beach employees gave to causes they were passionate about.

“We’ve never had issues with people wanting to help,” Hannah said.

TQL’ers have surpassed $1 million in giving for five straight years. Whether they’re supporting a cause they’re passionate about or discovering a new organization through volunteering, employees continue to give back.

Some of Zach’s team members even asked when they could start donating before the year’s campaign even began. That, he said, is a tribute to TQL’s culture.

“TQL is well known for charitable giving, and fellow employees appreciate and want to be part of that as well,” he said.
