Hoops Action Heating Up

Man hanging on basketball rim after dunking

The best shot of the night didn’t count and the best comment on the best shot of the night can’t be printed. In other words, even as the temperature dropped, the action heated up on TQL Court for the second day of the annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

A referee waived off a thunderous rebound dunk thrown down by Team Fort Lauderdale that would have ended the game. He called over the back – which was true in the sense that roofs are over our heads – prompting some quips not fit for family consumption.

But small controversy aside – Lauderdale won the game on its next possession and looks like a contender to come out of the loser’s bracket -- and the first-ever national version of the tournament is living up to the hype.

Four out-of-town teams remain in the winner’s bracket – Pittsburgh, Tampa, Detroit and Chicago. So does the Cincinnati headquarters-based defending champion - Team Back to Back to Back - featuring arguably the most dominant player in the field, a seven-footer who played for Bob Huggins at West Virginia.

Action resumes at 5:30 tonight (May 21) with 17 games on tap to determine the finalists who will compete for the title during Friday’s patio party.
