TQL Hosts 8th Annual Corporate Leadership Conference

Cincinnati, OH – Total Quality Logistics (TQL), the nation’s sixth largest freight brokerage firm, recently hosted approximately 90 students from Northern Kentucky University for the 8th annual Corporate Leadership Conference.

Organized by NKU’s Norse Leadership Society and the Northern Kentucky Leadership Institute, the Corporate Leadership Conference is an annual event designed to give students the opportunity to learn first-hand from the region’s top executives. Following in the footsteps of past hosts such as P&G and GE, TQL welcomed the students into its Ivy Pointe corporate headquarters for a full day of interactive presentations and seminars focused on how to be a leader and succeed in the business world. The keynote address was given by TQL’s Executive Vice President Kerry Byrne, with an introduction by TQL’s Vice President of Human Resources, Eric Grothaus.

“TQL is a unique example of leadership here in Cincinnati,” said Kerry Byrne, TQL’s Executive Vice President. “As a relatively young corporation, we have grown to become one of the region’s largest companies and the 6th largest in our industry. Much of our success has come from our internal leaders. More than 74% of our current managers were promoted from within. That speaks volumes about the dedication of our employees and their desire to guide those around them.”

“Additionally,” Byrne added, “we’ve created a reputation in the transportation industry for a commitment to doing things differently than our competitors; the right way, not necessarily the easy way. It’s one of our five guiding principles and the textbook definition of leadership.”

In addition to its internal management structure, many of TQL’s employees have active leadership roles in a variety of community organizations. Members of its executive leadership team serve on the boards of non-profit organizations such as the Starshine and United Way. Numerous TQL sales professionals also have had integral roles in establishing groups such as the Clermont County Young Professionals and Habitat for Humanity Young Professionals.

“The experience our students had at TQL during this year’s Corporate Leadership Conference was unlike any in the year’s past,” said Tiffany Mayse, Assistant Director of Leadership Development at NKU’s Office of Student Life. “The atmosphere at the company is energetic and contagious. They have so many young, yet extremely successful professionals on their team. Our students were able to see that the life of corporate leadership does not have to be stuffy and boring, and it’s about more than micro-managing your employees. It’s about building up the people around you, directly or indirectly, to do well both individually and a team as a whole.”
